When Brett Goldstein, Jason Segel and Bill Lawrence asked how they got Harrison Ford on the show, Segel said that Goldstein had originally wanted a "Harrison Ford type," and prepared to audition for people like Ford. Segel told Goldstein that they should at least take it to Ford first, thinking he would immediately reject it, but at least other people would hear that the project had been brought to Harrison Ford, generating interest from other notable actors.

Goldstein still doesn’t understand what he did to convince her, but he was elated nonetheless. Distraught therapist Jason Segal works to get his life together, get his daughter to stop hating him, and helps his patients by doing a lot of borderline unethical things that are probably a really bad idea.
I don’t really love Jason
Segal, but he became my therapist, and the supporting roles are Harrison Ford and Jessica Williams, who I love very much. The series is often very funny and touching in a non-annoying way, with good support from Krista Miller and Lucita Maxwell.
I was a little on the fence after the first episode, but the series quickly grew on me and sold me by the end
